About this glossary
What is this glossary for?
It defines the words this industry uses without agreeing on: SEO, GEO, AI visibility, retrieval, attribution. Each entry answers the question in its first sentence, then explains how the term is used in practice, where it applies, and what people get wrong about it.
Which terms are covered?
Four areas. Organic search — crawling, indexing, structure, content. Generative and answer engines — GEO, AEO, retrieval, embeddings, agents and the tools around them. Trust — E-E-A-T, authorship, provenance, disclosure. And measurement — search and paid metrics, attribution, share of voice, citation share.
Who is it written for?
Somebody doing the work: an in-house marketer, an SEO, a founder writing their own pages, an agency explaining a decision to a client. Not an academic reference — the test each entry has to pass is whether it changes what you do on Monday.
How are the entries written?
Drafted by a model against a fixed contract — a direct answer, worked sections, an example, common mistakes, sources — then checked automatically and, where the byline says so, read by an editor before publication. Every entry names which of the two it had.
Why does it exist in several languages?
Because the people doing this work do not all read English, and a definition translated badly is worse than no definition. Each language is generated in that language rather than machine-translated from the English, and a term keeps its name — an acronym is not translated.
